Using the fronts of the Liberty Building as a template, I create textures out of text based on these templates, and let them become more and less abstract as you move through the pages in order to show the confusion and disorientation experiencing while entering the building. You can only find yourself back (or at least that’s my case) if you have the whole overview of the shop’s structure, which is not given at the entrance, there are no maps to be found very easily as you often find in other stores of important sizes.
As text I am using the shop’s history as well as the products they sell.
At first I wanted to create some kind of leaflet/foldout that would show the building, with the 14 different fronts, and could be used as a poster, which I would screenprint.
Then I thought of the flipbook, using the patterns of the front as a base.
Here is a preview of first tryouts of the pages.
The Format of a Flipbook.
In order to simulate the walk through the shop, I decided on a flipbook, which could also be turned into an interactive book.
You can flip through very fast and get the whole picture together through the visual overlapping or look at each page separately and find little mysteries and hidden treasures as you might find while looking at the building or merchandise in the department store.
